Received a PHP security warning?

PHP has released security fixes for CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, two critical vulnerabilities that can allow an attacker to run code without logging in. Ask your host to confirm the server is patched.

The releases announced on 21 October are 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 and 8.2.35. Your host may supply a vendor backport. These release numbers are a dated reference, not a permanent target for future upgrades.

Read the PHP project’s security advisory. Unsure what your host’s response means? Include it in your enquiry.

The work behind the version number

Update PHP. Keep the important things working.

PHP is part of the software running your WordPress website on its hosting server. It needs its own updates, alongside WordPress, themes and plugins.

A hosting control panel can make changing PHP look simple. The question is whether your website’s plugins, theme and custom features are ready for the version you choose.

Vibes helps Melbourne businesses assess the site, work through compatibility problems and coordinate the change with their hosting provider. We pay particular attention to the features your business relies on: enquiries, checkout, bookings and member access.

Already changed PHP and your site has stopped working? Tell us what changed and when. We can assess the error and recommend a recovery path.

A practical next step for your website.

A warning in WordPress

You have seen “PHP Update Required” or an outdated PHP notice and want someone to handle the next steps.

A host asking you to upgrade

Your hosting provider has announced a PHP change, support deadline or extra charge for an older version.

An older site holding you back

A legacy theme, plugin or custom feature needs attention before the site can use a supported PHP branch.

How we handle it

Check first. Test carefully. Then make the change.

We plan around your website and hosting setup. Timing depends on compatibility work, access and your host’s availability.

01

Review the site and hosting

We check the current PHP version, available patched versions, WordPress components and the important business functions. We confirm the scope, access required and likely compatibility work.

02

Back up and test on a copy

We prepare backups and a staging copy where available, then test the proposed version with the site’s plugins, theme and custom code. Any repairs or paid licences are scoped before proceeding.

03

Plan and apply the live change

Once the checks pass, we coordinate the switch with your host, agree an appropriate change window and confirm the recovery options. Some hosting setups require the provider to perform the server update.

04

Check the website after the upgrade

We check agreed pages and workflows, review relevant errors and confirm the active PHP version or the host’s patch confirmation. You receive a record of the change and any recommended follow-up.

Choosing the version

Supported, patched and right for your site.

A major version number on its own does not tell you whether PHP has the latest security fixes. We consider the exact package, hosting provider and site compatibility before recommending a target.

PHP 8.2 receives upstream security support until 31 December 2026. PHP 8.1 and older no longer receive upstream updates, although some vendors provide separately maintained packages.

If you are moving from PHP 7.4 or another older branch, plugin or custom-code repairs may be needed. We will explain the options before the live change.

See the PHP support schedule for current lifecycle dates.

Questions

PHP upgrade questions, answered.

In WordPress, open Tools → Site Health → Info → Server and look for PHP version. If a vendor maintains your PHP packages, ask your host to confirm the patch status as well. You can read the WordPress PHP update guide for more background.

PHP is managed on the hosting server. Updating WordPress, a theme or a security plugin does not itself update the PHP runtime. Your hosting control panel or provider normally manages that change.

Older plugins, themes and custom code can behave differently on a newer PHP branch. That is why we assess compatibility and test key workflows before a planned live upgrade. No website change can carry an absolute guarantee against disruption.

Yes. Tell us about your checkout, payment gateway, shipping rules, subscriptions and other important integrations. We agree which workflows need testing and whether a planned change window is required. Live payments are not used for testing without your approval.

We can assess an upgrade on your current hosting. What we can change depends on the access and PHP versions your provider offers. If the host cannot provide an appropriate maintained version, we will explain the options, including migration if needed.

We quote after reviewing the site and hosting setup. A straightforward version change differs from an older site needing plugin replacements or custom-code repairs. Send your website URL, hosting provider and any warning you received so we can scope the work.

We aim to minimise disruption through testing and a planned change window. Availability during the change depends on your host and the work required. We confirm the approach and recovery options before proceeding.

Yes. Share the error message and the version change, if known. We can assess whether the problem relates to a plugin, theme, custom code or hosting configuration. Any temporary recovery step should be followed by a supported, patched long-term solution.
